Hiking Costa Brava: Day Hike from Blanes to Tossa de Mar

Costa Brava, translating to Rugged Coast, is the miraculous coastline making up the northern part of Catalonia in Spain. Indeed this coast is rough, rugged, and wild — living up to its name quite well. However, it’s also a coast full of cacti and other succulents, gorgeous quaint beaches and plenty of caves for exploring, too. One of the best ways to experience Costa Brava, of course, is by hiking it. Hiking from Blanes to Tossa de Mar is a must-do as it boasts all of these beauties into a one day hike.

Hike from Blanes to Tossa de Mar ~ 18 miles, roughly 6-7 hours with stops.

This gorgeous hike will initially navigate you out of the hills of Blanes through the rocky coast. As you make your way through to Tossa, you’ll stumble upon exquisite views of the turquoise-colored Mediterranean Sea with the rugged backdrop of Costa Brava. The water is so clear that you can see to the bottom of the sea; it’s gorgeous, to say the least. We mainly referred to Wikiloc to figure out where the trail began. Check out the map here.

You’ll follow the red and white lines of the GR-92 international trail system pictured above. It’s well marked throughout the majority of the hike. You’ll wind in and out of the coast, passing a couple of beaches (some which are nudist), and going through Lloret de Mar and the mountainous area of Canyelles.

You’ll be climbing up and going back down quite a few times and there’s a hefty amount of stairs, so prepare yourself in advance for a more moderate hike, especially if you’re hiking with a backpack.

Arrive to Lloret de Mar.

Eventually you’ll make it over to the touristy town of Lloret de Mar. Here you can easily find lunch and relax by the sea. Bodega Se Xarxa is a great choice for fresh bocadillos and other snacks.

On your way out of Lloret, you’ll pass the beautiful, ancient castle Sa Caleta Lloret and follow it past as you straddle the coastline with the safety of the stone wall located to the right.

Continue to follow the GR-92 trail markings as you navigate in and out of the coast. You’ll jump over some rocks and pass a couple of beautiful calas that will just lure into jumping into its inviting water.

Through here you can also navigate slightly off the trail to Cala Morisca. To do so, once you’re in Canyelles you’ll eventually see a funky, mosaic-tiled house. You can go up past it by following right (stay left for the GR-92) and then follow the white markings where you’ll be led down through greenery and endless stairs, eventually finding the cozy, tiny Cala Morisca. To get back on the trail go back to the mosaic house and keep left instead.

Arrive to Tossa de Mar.

Finally, as you continue on through the trail, you’ll begin to see Tossa de Mar uncover itself in the distance. You can find plenty of hotels here for a reasonable price. We stayed at Hotel Turissa. It was just off the trail and a few minutes away from the center of Tossa with a wonderful free breakfast and nice room set ups.

Spend the next morning and afternoon wandering around the adorable town of Tossa. Explore its cobble-stoned streets, quaint beaches, and venture up to its castle for nice views, and check out all the funky cacti hanging off the coast, too.

My top travel recommendations ♡

These are a few of my top travel tips that will save you time and money while setting up for an AMAZING trip.

Booking flights: I can’t get enough of Google Flights. They have a cool feature where you can type in your departure airport and discover where you could fly within a certain budget. Otherwise, you can also compare airports and see what day is best to fly in/out to help you save money and have the most efficient flight path.

Travel insurance: SafetyWing is my go-to choice for travel medical insurance. They have a global policy that covers 180+ countries. You can visit any doctor, cancel anytime, and you’re even covered for a few weeks after returning to your home country.

Anti-theft bag: To help protect against pickpockets, I like to carry my beloved Travelon bag. It’s slash-resistant, has locked zippers, and is very sleek and functional for traveling abroad.

Accommodation: I almost exclusively use Booking.com to find places to stay when traveling. I got tired of all the additional fees from Airbnb and their hosts. Plus, Booking has everything from hotels and hostels to b&bs and entire house/apartment rentals.

Travel Credit Card: I love-love-love my Capital One Venture One credit card. It has a $0 annual fee and no fees when using abroad or paying in a foreign currency. Plus you get 20,000 bonus miles when you spend $500 in your first three months when you get this card.

Tours: I don’t travel on complete tours as I like to travel on my own terms, but I do like to book experiences, walking tours, and excursions through GetYourGuide. They have an amazing line-up of things to do in destinations around the globe. You can also fass a lot of skip-the-line tickets as well.
