The Shenandoah Valley is full of natural wonders, but few places are as magical—or as historic—as Grand Caverns, VA.
While many travelers flock to the more famous Luray Caverns, I opted for something less crowded and more authentic: Grand Caverns in Grottoes, Virginia. And let me tell you, it was the perfect choice for an underground adventure. Let’s dive into all the details.

Why Visit Grand Caverns, Virginia?
Located just 45 minutes northeast of Lexington (one of the best places to base your Shenandoah Valley stay) and just next to the Shenandoah National Park, Grand Caverns holds the title as the oldest continuously operating show cave in the United States. The cave was first open to the public back in 1806, and has been accepting visits every single year since. That’s more than 200 years of welcoming explorers.
Unlike some of the larger, tourist-heavy caves, Grand Caverns VA offers a quieter, more personal experience that lets you truly appreciate the natural beauty and history of the Shenandoah Valley. And doesn’t skip out on any of the allure! It’s a truly spectacular cave with many caverns to explore, both on feet and hands.
And just a couple short hours away from Washington D.C., it’s an excellent attraction to see during a weekend in the Valley.
Guided Tours at Grand Caverns
General tours run every hour, and tickets are $30 per person. A little insider tip: if you happen to stop at a Virginia rest area on your way to the Shenandoah Valley, look out for Grand Caverns brochures. They usually include a $2 discount per ticket, which is a nice bonus for families or groups.
The guided walking tour lasts about 70 minutes and takes you deep into a series of vast chambers filled with breathtaking formations. You’ll see towering stalactites, stalagmites, and rare shield formations—a unique type of mineral growth that makes Grand Caverns especially fascinating for geology lovers.
Our guide, Anna, made the experience even better. She was knowledgeable, entertaining, and sprinkled in plenty of quirky fun facts that made the caverns’ history (even Civil War-era relics) come alive. Anna even took everyone in my group’s photo at the end of the tour!

What It’s Like Inside
Walking through the “grand rooms” of the cave feels like stepping into another planet. The sheer size of the chambers combined with the shimmering mineral formations is surreal—almost like a setting out of a fantasy novel.
Whether you’re a science buff, a history enthusiast, or simply looking for a fun adventure, Grand Caverns VA strikes the perfect balance of education and exploration.
It’s easily one of the best attractions in the Shenandoah Valley, and I’m so glad we had the chance to visit.

Specialty Tours at Grand Caverns VA
While the regular walking tour is ideal for most visitors, thrill-seekers can take things up a notch with spelunking adventures. Grand Caverns offers three guided caving experiences that let you crawl, climb, and squeeze through the lesser-seen parts of the cavern system.
- Rock Bottom Tour – $65 per person
Great for beginners, this introductory caving experience takes you into some of the undeveloped sections of the caverns where you’ll do a bit of crawling and scrambling. - Grottoes Crawl – $80 per person
A step up in difficulty, this tour involves tighter passages and more physical challenges. It’s an exciting way to see hidden areas that most visitors never get to experience. - The Gauntlet – $120 per person
Designed for serious adventure-seekers, this advanced spelunking tour lives up to its name. Expect plenty of crawling, squeezing, and climbing through rugged terrain for a true underground challenge.
All spelunking tours require helmets, lights, and knee pads (gear is provided), and you’ll want to dress in clothes you don’t mind getting dirty.
Special Events at Grand Caverns
In addition to tours, Grand Caverns VA also hosts unique events throughout the year. The cave’s natural acoustics make it a unique venue for concerts, live performances, and even film screenings.
Attending one of these events is a completely different way to experience the caverns, and we wished there was something going on the day we visited. Nonetheless, check their events page to stay up-to-date on all their happenings.
