The colder months are here. Prep the hot chocolate, dig out your winter coats, and get ready for winter. A lot of us look forward to this season, while many would much rather skip ahead to spring. Whatever your preference is on winter, you’ll likely be spending a lot more time at home, and heating is expensive and it’s not very eco-friendly. Follow these environmentally friendly tips on how to keep your house warm during the colder months.

Invest in a radiator instead of central heating.
Radiators are far more eco-friendly than central heating systems and they still do an amazing job at keeping your house warm. They are green friendly and help keep your heating bill low! Radiators keep warm even after they’ve been shut off, so while you’ll be reducing your greenhouse gases, you’ll also be keeping your house warm and you bills low.
Use area rugs.
Area rugs don’t only add extra style to you home; they also help keep your house warm and cozy! These are especially useful if you have tile and wood floors as they can get quite chilly during the colder months.
Bundle up a bit.
Instead of increasing the thermostat, add a layer to your wardrobe. Put of fluffy socks, warm slippers, thick sweatpants, and a sweatshirt. Sometimes I’ll even wear a warm vest inside to add extra warmth to my core.
If it’s cold outside and you’re inside cranking up the heating in shorts and a t-shirt, this is a big sustainability no.
Add warm throw blankets.
I absolutely love throw blankets. They don’t only add style but they also one of the best ways to keep your house warm in winter. Drape them over you while you watch a movie, throw one over your shoulders when you run to grab a snack, or place them on top of your sofa for extra padding and warmth.
Shop for handmade throw blankets made in the US.
Let the sun in to keep your house warm.
If it’s sunny out, open the curtains and let the sun help keep your house warm. For windows that don’t receive direct sunlight, don’t worry about opening the curtains as it won’t help vey much. Direct sunlight is what you’re looking for.
Wool blanket for bedtime.
Wool is the king of cold-weather textiles, and works really well as a blanket on your bed during the colder months. You’ll feel cozy all night long with a warm wool blanket over you.
Beyond just keeping your warm, wool has other home-friendly benefits. It’s naturally flame-resistant, hypoallergenic, mold and mildew resistant, temperature regulating, and natural! Check out all the benefits of using wool.
If you’re really bored this winter, try your hand at knitting your own blanket (or start small with a scarf or ear warmers.)
Drink warm beverages.
Winter is a great excuse to sip warm coffee by morning and mulled wine and hot cider by night. Warm drinks help keep you and your hands warm while giving you something to do at home during the winter months (make homemade drinks!).
Minus the added brown sugar, here’s one of my favorite mulled wine recipes. Enjoy!
Light some candles.
Ok, a candle isn’t going to do very much to keep your house warm, but it certainly makes it a lot more cozy and it’s more eco-friendly than other lighting. Light some candles, get cozy, and sip mulled wine under a throw blanket while you binge your favorite winter films (or one of these best travel movies).
My favorite way to use candles is put scented wax in a candle wax warmer. Grab some winter candle scents on Etsy.
