What is the weather like in Scotland?

Before you decide what to wear in Scotland, familiarize yourself with the weather.

Scotland is notorious for its gloomy, rainy weather. With that, the country has a temperate maritime climate, which means mild temperatures, relatively cool summers, and generally mild winters. However, the weather can be quite unpredictable and windy, and Scotland is known for experiencing all four seasons in a single day.

Basically, Scotland outfits are all about the right layers. Here’s a brief overview of the weather in each season:

Spring (March to May):

Average daytime temperatures range from 7°C to 13°C (45°F to 55°F). With spring in Scotland comes longer daylight hours, blossoming flowers, and a gradual increase in temperatures.

However, be prepared for some rain and cool winds.

Summer (June to August):

Summer in Scotland is the warmest time of year, but don’t expect scorching temperatures (though brief heat waves can and do happen).

It’s the best time for outdoor activities like hiking in Scotland, with longer days and various festivals. Rainfall is still possible, so packing a light jacket is still advisable.

Fall (September to November):

Average daytime temperatures range from 7°C to 13°C (45°F to 55°F). Autumn brings stunning colors as the foliage changes across the country.

However, days start to shorten, and there’s a decent drop in temperature. Be prepared for rain and wind; it’s a good time to add layers to your Scotland packing list.

Winter (December to February):

The daytime average temperatures range from 2°C to 6°C (36°F to 43°F) in winter. During this season, the weather is mildly cold but not brutal like the Baltics. Nonetheless, temperatures can drop, especially in the Highlands.

Snow is possible but not very common, and it rarely disrupts daily life in the lowlands. Winter days are short (the sun will start setting between 3 and 4 pm), and it can be quite damp.

Reminders for weather in Scotland

Remember that Scotland’s weather is famously unpredictable, and conditions can vary widely depending on where your Scotland travel adventures take you. The best approach when choosing what to wear in Scotland is to think in layers and be prepared for rain.

Also, when planning hikes in Scotland, keep in mind that weather can change quickly. Going from rainy to sunny to cloudy to warm again is all too common in Scotland. So, come prepared with appropriate clothing and pack a day bag so you can add or take off layers as need be. You don’t want to get soaked or stuck on a mountain in poor weather conditions.

General Tips on How to Dress in Scotland

While the weather certainly changes from summer to winter, some constants stay the same that make packing for Scotland in every season a lot easier. Those constants are rain and wind.

scotland packing tips layers outfit

Scotland packing tip #1: Think in layers

As mentioned, layers are going to be the key strategy when deciding what to pack for Scotland. Add more when you’re cold, take some off when you’re warm – you know the drill.

When it comes to layers, consider a base shirt: either a long-sleeve shirt or short-sleeve depending on the season and overall high temperatures during the week you travel to Scotland.

From there, add another layer. It can be a cute cardigan for what to wear to Edinburgh or a sweatshirt for spending the day in the highlands.

Depending on the season, a final layer might be a wool scarf (one of my favorite things to buy in Scotland), a waterproof jacket, or hat for wind protection.

As I discuss what to wear in Scotland per season, you’ll get a better idea of what layers you need to pack.

Scotland packing tip #2: Prepare for rain & wind

This northern country is known for its rain and wind, it’s part of what makes its land so lush and beautiful. I say, embrace it, but be prepared for it. By that, I mean don’t go visiting Scotland without bringing a weatherproof jacket or coat.

I recommend something water resistant like a cute Trench coat for Edinburgh and Glasgow or an outdoorsy Columbia jacket for hiking in Scotland road tripping around Isle of Skye and the rest of the highlands.

You might also like to add a waterproof coating to the shoes you pack or order a pair of water resistant booties like this. Also, Dr. Martens are very popular in Scotland, and are pretty great in the rain.

Scotland packing tip #3: Plan for cooler weather

I always recommend packing for colder weather rather than assuming it’ll be warmer.

Even if the weather says sunny, you don’t want to be stuck with clothes in Scotland that aren’t warm enough. You can always take layers off, so just be sure you’ll have a base layer that will be good when it’s warmer.

rainy day glasgow

Scotland packing tip #4: Skip the umbrella

When it comes to what not to pack for Scotland, I’d say forget about the umbrella. One too many times I looked out my window on Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow and saw someone’s umbrella flip inside out and break because of the wind.

Plus, the sturdiest umbrellas are usually quite bulky and impractical for packing for Scotland in a carry-on.

And if it’s drizzling, most locals won’t bother with an umbrella. They’ll still bear the weather in a rain jacket with or without the hood up and trudge along on their merry way.

Finally, most hotels in Scotland offer complimentary umbrellas to their guests. Use these during your stay for the most convenient option on the rainiest of days.

Scotland Outfits Guide

From cities like Edinburgh and Glasgow to the heart of the highlands and the Isle of Skye, here’s what to wear in Scotland depending on the season.

What to wear in Scotland in spring & fall (March to May & September to November)

The shoulder seasons are beautiful times to visit Scotland, particularly if you come mid to late spring and early fall. If you want to know what to wear in Scotland in spring and fall, follow along to plan the best Scotland outfits.

For each season, I will include what to wear in Edinburgh and other Scottish cities as well as what to wear in Scottish highlands – assuming you’ll be doing a little bit of both city and countryside during your trip.

  • Rain jacketColumbia is my go-to. For something more city-esque, this Trench will make gorgeous Scotland outfits for Edinburgh.
  • Layers – base layers like these Smartwool tops, cardigan or vest, jacket, scarf (swap these out depending on the weather during that time of day). The Smartwool is excellent but pricey so here’s a 100% merino wool long-sleeve that’s a bit more budget-friendly
  • Skirt or dress, w/ tights packed just in case; you can layer this look with a long-sleeve underneath the dress for cooler days and evenings
  • Cute top – for nights out in the city, can be paired with skirt or dress
  • Comfortable above-the-ankle boots – particularly ones that are water resistant or can be applied with this waterproofing spray
  • Outdoorsy trousers – for hiking in Scotland or walks through small towns – these are perfect
  • Moisture-wicking outdoorsy shirt – for treks up Arthur’s Seat, hiking, smaller towns, etc
  • Medium to lightweight jacket – bonus points if it’s water resistant
  • Jeans – your favorite, coziest pair. These Levis are good for Scotland fashion,
  • Thin-ish long-sleeve shirt – I love a long-sleeve turtleneck. They give me a serious confidence boost and you’ll feel comfortable without being too hot or cold. Go with a wool blend, or 100% cotton if it’s not a rainy day
  • Optional hiking boots or waterproof sneakers – ideal for hikes, walks, being comfortable. I love my Columbia pair.

What to wear in Scotland in winter (December, January, February)

Winter is the coldest and windiest time of year and the sun sets early. So, you’ll want to plan out your Scotland outfits by prioritizing warm layers.

And remember, establishments are going to be warm and cozy, perhaps with a fireplace going. So, make sure you plan layers that will still leave you comfortable when you’re settled indoors.

  • Thick weatherproof winter jacket – Not a thin top layer. Something with added warmth like this Columbia jacket.
  • Layers – warmer than what you’d pack for fall/spring but still try to bring your thinnest options (100% merino wool turtlenecks are my favorite) so you can save space in suitcase for the best things to buy in Scotland
  • Warm, waterproof bootsthese ones are great for when deciding what to pack for Scotland in winter.
  • Outdoorsy trousers for hiking in Scotland or walks through small towns – these are perfect
  • Thermal layers optional – you might want to add a pair of thin thermal leggings to wear under jeans or outdoorsy clothes; these will feel so much better when a gust of wind hits
  • Packable insulated vest – something that will keep your torso warm (a warm torso will help keep the rest of you warm too)
  • A warm wool hat – a sturdy wool winter hat that wicks away moisture is best. I love a wool beret.
  • Ear muffs optional – my sensitive ears need extra protection for Scotland’ windy weather. If yours do too, bring something like these ear muffs
  • Gloves – for warm and cozy hands
  • Warm but not bulky sweater – this goes with your layers but I’m reiterating the importance of a cozy wool sweater that won’t take up much space in your suitcase; paired with warm jeans or trousers, a tartan scarf, and wool coat, your Edinburgh outfit will be TOP!
  • Warm sweatshirt – something cozy for highlands
what to wear in scotland in july (1)

What to wear in Scotland in summer (June, July, August)

  • A waterproof windbreaker – While you might not need a full on coat, you’ll certainly be glad you brought a quality windbreaker, especially when exploring the highlands. I love Columbia, so here’s my recommendation for a stylish women’s rain jacket.
  • A light sweater or long-sleeve – For cooler days and nights, pack a couple of cute super lightweight sweaters that you can easily match with your outfits.
  • 1 or 2 skirts or dresses – A skirt or dress can be a very versatile option when packing for summer in Scotland. Locals like to get dressed up for nights out and if that’s your thing too then packing a skirt or dress is a great choice. Plus, you can easily wear the outfit with a light jacket if it gets cold out during the day. I love this  this linen spaghetti strap dress. It’s versatile for any summer weather. You can add a turtleneck or tee underneath or throw on a cardigan or light jacket when it’s cooler out.
  • A pair of denim or black jeans – These are essential! Denim or black jeans are a staple item for Scotland outfits, so pack a pair for your trip! These Levis in any color are a perfect Scotland style!
  • A couple of short sleeved shirts – Pack a couple of your favorite short sleeved shirts to go with your jeans or skirt.
  • Outdoorsy trousers for hiking in Scotland or walks through small towns – these are perfect
  • Tank top – if you come during a hot week, you can wear a tank top! but if you pack one and it’s too chilly, wear the tank top over one of your shirts for a cute Scotland outfit (great way to switch up your layers & tank tops take up little space in a carry-on)
  • Dressy top – Just a cute top you would wear to go out for drinks in Edinburgh in winter.
  • A layerable cardigan or jacket – As the weather can be unpredictable, a cardigan or jacket is a must. The weather can change throughout the day, so having something to layer up is a great idea. You can wear it over your sweater on the chiliest days. If you want something high-quality, this long cardigan is stunning and perfect for Edinburgh.
  • Water resistant booties – Ankle boots are so cute and work well when packing for the UK in the summer. Grab some that are also water resistant and you have your perfect shoes for stylishly exploring Scotland (this pair is also high-qualtiy and water resistant, and you can add this coating spray to any of your shoes for Scotland. are mega popular in Scotland. Dr. Martens are also a good choice for the UK.  (I love these)
  • Sandals optional – Check the weather before you go, but if you’re a sandal person, you might be able to wear them during Scotland in summer.. If you get a pair like Teva you can even wear them on light hikes around Scotland.
  • Flats, Toms, sneakers – If not sandals, these Insta-famous flats or Toms are great picks for walking shoes for cities and towns. Whatever your go-to walking shoes are, bring those.
  • Optional hiking boots or waterproof sneakers – ideal for hikes, walks, being comfortable

Extra tips on Scotland clothes for summer

As the weather can change so quickly, you might be comfortable in an ankle-length dress and then one minute later a cloud covers the sun and you’re shivering.

So, think about bringing a jacket in your day pack (this is a cute option that doesn’t look touristy) and almost always wearing closed toed shoes.

Pack Scotland outfits ideal for cooler weather, so you don’t end up having to rush to buy clothes to stay warm.

Other things to pack for Scotland

Here are a few other things you might consider when deciding what to pack for Scotland.

  • Plug converter for your electronics – this is a good option that will work anywhere in the world
  • Digital camera – I use this one
  • Reusable water bottle – Scottish water is some of the best, so don’t waste your money on water bottles. This collapsible version is awesome.
  • Midge repellent – these nat-like bugs come out May-September (but you can wait and buy this in Scotland)
  • A book – for train rides, down-time, or slow travel experiences in cafes
  • Optional anti-theft crossbody – pickpockets aren’t much of an issue in Scotland but if you’re traveling elsewhere maybe London, Paris, Barcelona, this bag will be a HUGE save.

FAQ

Here are some of the most common questions about what to pack for Scotland.

What is the clothing style in scotland?

It varies from person to person and place to place, but in general, people prefer more neutral tones and a laid back, put-together style.

Think black denim, oversized jackets or dark trench coats, Dr. Martens, hats. People don’t wear tartan and kilts all day, despite popular belief.

What is the traditional clothing of Scotland?

Kilts, tartan, tam o’shanter, Celtic brooches are some of the most popular ways to display a traditional Scottish outfit. Kilts and tartan are most often worn for celebrations like weddings, Burns Night, NYE, and other events.

Are leggings acceptable in Scotland?

Yes. I’ve definitely seen people wear leggings out in public in Scotland, but it’s not the norm. I don’t recommend wearing leggings in Scotland unless you’re wearing them in a more stylish way like with an oversized shirt and booties.

How do I pack for 2 weeks in Scotland?

Layers, layers, and layers. Bring pieces that you can mix and match. Plan for cooler weather, so you don’t end up needing to purchase extra clothes to stay comfortable.

Bring enough underwear for a week +1 day and wash half wash through your trip. I recommend 4-5 tops that can be styled with different outfits, 1 pair of jeans, 2 trousers, 1-2 outdoorsy outfits (depending on how much time you’re doing that type of travel), a dress or skirt outfit that can be paired with tops, a jacket for the weather, and accessories for warmth. Also, pack comfortable walking shoes/booties.

My top travel recommendations ♡

These are a few of my top travel tips that will save you time and money while setting up for an AMAZING trip.

Booking flights: I can’t get enough of Google Flights. They have a cool feature where you can type in your departure airport and discover where you could fly within a certain budget. Otherwise, you can also compare airports and see what day is best to fly in/out to help you save money and have the most efficient flight path.

Travel insurance: SafetyWing is my go-to choice for travel medical insurance. They have a global policy that covers 180+ countries. You can visit any doctor, cancel anytime, and you’re even covered for a few weeks after returning to your home country.

Anti-theft bag: To help protect against pickpockets, I like to carry my beloved Travelon bag. It’s slash-resistant, has locked zippers, and is very sleek and functional for traveling abroad.

Accommodation: I almost exclusively use Booking.com to find places to stay when traveling. I got tired of all the additional fees from Airbnb and their hosts. Plus, Booking has everything from hotels and hostels to b&bs and entire house/apartment rentals.

Travel Credit Card: I love-love-love my Capital One Venture One credit card. It has a $0 annual fee and no fees when using abroad or paying in a foreign currency. Plus you get 20,000 bonus miles when you spend $500 in your first three months when you get this card.

Tours: I don’t travel on complete tours as I like to travel on my own terms, but I do like to book experiences, walking tours, and excursions through GetYourGuide. They have an amazing line-up of things to do in destinations around the globe. You can also fass a lot of skip-the-line tickets as well.
