Explore Mallorca: Day Trip from Palma to Sóller

Mountainous Mallorca is a happy hunting ground for the outdoorsy. Its terrain in the Balearic Islands is that of rocks, mountains, greenery, beaches and endless lemon and orange trees. It’s a blissful island that has been kissed by the sun and has fully embraced the relaxed mindset of the Mediterranean. Particularly from the capital city Palma to small town Sóller and Port de Sóller, there’s plenty of beauty to be discovered and wandered through on this island.

As a day trip from the capital city Palma, taking old train (Tren de Sóller) to Sóller is worth the trip for the aesthetic alone, not to mention the glorious views and pit stop you’ll make along the way. It costs 18 euros for a single trip, but a pro tip would be to take the train there and return by bus for only 2.40 euros. The bus is actually faster than the train, too.

Once arriving to Sóller, enjoy exploring this adorable town with its mountainous backdrop and ample street markets and winding pathways. If you’re lucky you might even see locals happily bouncing and twirling around as they participate in the island’s traditional dance in the main plaza.

Geographically speaking, Sóller is separated into two parts. The main town and the port are divided between some forests and hills. Though there’s a main road with public transportation connecting the two, why not enjoy a little hike with fantastic views instead?

There’s an easy 7 km. hike from the town to the port. It passes farmland, orange and lemon trees, and tons of cats. It boasts a magnificent backdrop, too. Here’s a map of the trail. It took us a little over an hour to arrive to the center of Port de Sóller, and it was well worth it.

Something I particularly loved about this little hike — besides all the cats — was passing a couple of houses that had little buckets on their gates which read, in Catalan, something to the tune of, “Freshly picked and clean, take what you like.” Inside the buckets were fresh and plump lemons and oranges. Hanging off the larger bucket was a little jar for change. I loved this idea. Take what you want, give a little in return. Definitely indulged.

Once arriving in Port de Sóller, depending on the time of year, hop in the ocean or enjoy a scenic picnic by the beach. The town itself is lovely with its main pedestrian street along the beach and sailboats out in the distance, but I enjoyed the charm of the main town a bit more. It felt more lively and atmospheric. So, after a healthy little hike and further wanders through Port de Sóller, head back to the town center and enjoy a drink in the plaza as you soak up the Mallorcan sun and lingering smells of citrus and happiness.

My Top Travel Recommendations ♡

These are a few of my top travel tips that will save you time and money while setting up for an AMAZING trip.

Booking flights: I almost exclusively use Google Flights. They have a cool feature where you can type in your departure airport and discover where you could fly within a certain budget. Otherwise, you can also compare airports and see what day is best to fly in/out to help you save money and have the most efficient flight path.

Travel insurance: SafetyWing is my go-to choice for travel insurance. They have a global policy that covers 180+ countries. You can visit any doctor, cancel anytime, and you’re even covered for a few weeks after returning to your home country.

Anti-theft bag: To help protect against pickpockets, I like to carry my beloved Travelon bag. It’s slash-resistant, has locked zippers, and is very sleek and functional for traveling abroad.

Accommodation: I love using Booking.com to find places to stay when traveling. Booking has everything from hotels and hostels to b&bs and entire house/apartment rentals.

Travel Credit Card: I love-love-love my Capital One Venture One credit card. It has a $0 annual fee and no fees when using abroad or paying in a foreign currency. Plus you get 20,000 bonus miles when you spend $500 in your first three months when you get this card.

Car rentals: I use DiscoverCars.com when renting a car. Great deals, customer support, and range of comapnies. You can save up to 70% via the website instead of booking a car directly.

Tours: I don’t travel on complete tours as I like to travel on my own terms, but I do like to book experiences and walking tours on GetYourGuide. They have an amazing line-up of things to do in destinations around the globe. You can also access skip-the-line tickets.
